The west tower will serve as backup for the primary east tower, which contains the pump room for both.
Construction on the west water tank and mechanical and electrical work for the whole system still remains to be completed. The west tower’s roof and floor will be lifted into place in pieces and installed, and all anchoring and interior and exterior painting will be completed.
The main activity continuing on the east tower is installation of the pump room. The west tower will serve as backup for the primary east tower, which contains the pump room for both.
The east tank also will be repainted because of rust streaks from moisture in the seal joints. Changes have been put in place to help prevent similar rusting on the west tank.
Testing, which is scheduled for December and January, must be done before the tanks are filled in February.
Also remaining to be completed are the retaining wall and the paving around the towers before operations begin, which is scheduled toward the end of March 2010.
B&W Y-12 operates the Y‑12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
