Warther has spent the last 15 years in government nuclear and chemical environmental cleanup. He has held positions with the DNFSB at Rocky Flats and served as DOE’s Ohio Field Office Manager, where the Fernald, Mound, Columbus and Ashtabula sites were completed. He directed completion of the environmental impact statement at West Valley, N.Y., and completed the Spent Fuel shipment from West Valley to Idaho.
After leaving government service, Bob led a major chemical warfare agent demilitarization project (VX) for the Department of the Army in Newport, Ind., and subsequently joined B&W Technical Services Group in June of this year. B&W serves as managing and operating contractor at Y‑12 in partnership with Bechtel.
Warther’s commitment to safety is evidenced by the fact that the Rocky Flats, Ohio and Newport sites each held the best safety record in its class during his tenure at these projects. Warther will assume all management responsibilities for Y‑12’s ARRA projects.
“Bob Warther brings extensive experience in environmental cleanup and an exemplary safety record to Y‑12 as we continue to ramp up our efforts to transform the site,” said Darrel Kohlhorst, president and general manager of B&W Y‑12. “We aim to use ARRA funding as effectively as possible, and we’re glad to have Bob on our growing team.” John Krueger, Director, Environmental Management, has managed ongoing Integrated Facilities Disposition Program (IFDB) efforts related to Y‑12 while simultaneously managing the new ARRA project activities. John and the ARRA project team’s efforts were recognized by the DOE In-Process Review team in July 2009 as being one of the best prepared and planned ARRA projects in the Complex. Krueger will report to Warther.
Y-12 is a key facility in the U.S. Nuclear Weapons Complex and is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and security of the nuclear weapons stockpile and serves as the nation’s primary repository of highly enriched uranium. B&W Y‑12 operates the Y‑12 National Security Complex for the National Nuclear Security Administration.
