Thurs, 8 October 2009

B&W Y-12 has been honored with a 2009 National Safety Council Industry Leader Award for safety performance within its industry. The award recognizes outstanding safety achievements among member companies based on self-reported data.

B&W Y-12 is one of 101 companies honored with the 2009 Industry Leader Award. The Industry Leader Award recognizes the top 5 percent of member companies, units and facilities that have qualified for the National Safety Council’s 2009 Occupational Excellence Achievement Award (based on 2008 calendar year data). Winners are selected based on National American Industry Classification System code, lowest total injury/illness incidence rate and employee work hours. This is the first time that B&W Y‑12 has received this award.

“I’m proud of everyone at Y-12 because this award demonstrates the entire site’s dedication to creating a safe work environment,” said B&W Y‑12 President and General Manager Darrel Kohlhorst. “Our goal always is to have a perfect safety record, and Y‑12 employees are serious about making sure that they and their coworkers go home safely every day.”

B&W Y-12 also received the National Safety Council’s Occupational Excellence Achievement. Award winners are chosen from those having less than 50 percent of the national industry average. B&W Y‑12’s average was 1.4 injuries per 100 workers, while the national average is 7.9. The average for the manufacturing industry, the category assigned to the Y‑12 National Security Complex, is 5.6.

B&W Y-12 also received the Significant Improvement Award, which recognizes a 20 percent or greater reduction in Lost Workday Away Rate from the previous year’s rate.

Awards of Merit were also received for Y‑12 Construction, which had five years and more than 2.7 million work hours without a Lost Workday Away injury; Y‑12 Emergency Services, which worked 750,000 hours without a recordable injury; and the Chief Financial Officer Division and the Science, Technology and Partnerships organizations which both achieved zero injuries for the calendar year 2008.

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to educating and influencing people to prevent accidental injuries and deaths. Members of NSC include more than 54,000 businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals.
